All articlesIn a world rapidly transitioning from traditional education to more dynamic, self-driven learning, Buildspace has quickly gained attention through great social media reels. Since its inception four years ago, Buildspace has evolved dramatically, from creating products for homeschoolers to becoming a major player in the online education space, focusing on what learners are passionate about rather than conventional curricula. This narrative delves into the journey of Buildspace, its trials and triumphs, and the visionary path it's paving for the future of education.
Buildspace began with a modest yet bold aim: to provide educational resources for homeschoolers. However, the founder's vision quickly expanded, leading to the creation of an online elementary school in 2019. This venture grew to cater to over 100,000 students aged 4-11, focusing on cultivating curiosity over rote learning. By 2021, a significant pivot was made away from this model towards a new concept called Buildspace, which was anchored in the belief that education needed to escape the "rat race" of degrees and certificates and instead, foster a culture of working on projects driven by passion.
By 2022, Buildspace was generating $1.5 million annually from a product line called "Projects," where developers could engage in fun, side projects like building AI avatar generators or NFT-based video games. These projects weren't just educational; they were starting points for users to launch their own products, turning hobbies into businesses or portfolio pieces for job applications. However, the true potential was seen not in continuing as a course platform but in forging a new path—this led to the daring decision to scrap the profitable "Projects" model to further innovate.
The ambitious pivot led to the creation of "Nights & Weekends," an accelerator program unlike any other. Aimed at creators who fall between the cracks of traditional systems—those aspiring to produce albums, films, novels, or tech innovations without the structure of a conventional accelerator—Nights & Weekends offered a unique blend of community support, creativity, and freedom. The program grew quickly, becoming the world's largest accelerator for any idea, fostering an environment where participants could start from scratch and gain their first fans and revenue in just six weeks.
